The power of the book lies exactly in the anguish stirred up by the continuing presence of this paradox. 'O' suggests a cartoon of her sex, not her individual sex but simply woman it also stands for a nothing” (55). “O's quest is neatly summed up in the expressive letter which serves her for a name. Although this is in fact a shortening of the name Odile, it could also stand for " object" or " orifice", an O being a symbolic representation of any " hole". The heroine of the novel has the shortest possible name, consisting solely of the letter O.
